Is Your Dog Eating Off Your Tables? Advice from a Dog Trainer in Rosebery
It can be very difficult for dogs to pass food without eating it. Their sense of smells is a lot better than ours for one, so the food that smells good to us must smell irresistible to dogs, right? The most realistic solution to this issue is to use a combination of management and training techniques to make it easy for your dog to avoid temptation. Here’s advice from your local dog trainer in Rosebery!
Training Techniques:
- Block access to places where food is left out so that there is no opportunity for your dog to fail. You can use baby gates or removing your dog to another room.
- If you can’t use baby gates, teach your dog to stay behind an imaginary line. You might need a dog trainer’s help for this one!
Catch Your Dog In the Act of Stealing Food to Teach Him Not to:
- Leave food on the counter and place yourself somewhere you can see the food but where your dog thinks he is not being watched.
- Wait for him to go up to the counter, and just before he jumps, ask him to ‘leave it’.
- If he backs away, praise him and reward with something delicious.
